We are going to Hongkong next weekend. What we usually do, aside from going to Disneyland and Ocean Park, is to make a side trip to Macau. They said that it's like going to Las Vegas with Macau's casinos. But for this coming trip, we have plans of going to SchenZen (sorry if my spelling is not correct) or any other part of China that is near Hongkong. However, when we inquired with friends in Hongkong, they say that we should buy a visa near the border. Take note of the word buy.

My husband was immediately turned off so we do not have an itinerary for now - we are in Hongkong for 3 days only, i.e. June 25 to 27.

Your friend is right. If you want to visit China and you don't hold an HKID card, you'll be required to buy a visa to China. And not only is this visa pricey, but you'll have to apply for it and it'll take a week or two (you can pay more for faster processing time). This visa is only worth it if you plan to travel around China for more than a few days. Otherwise, I wouldn't even bother.
